- AirAsia launched two new routes from Penang (PEN) on 1 July, operating its first flights to Hanoi (HAN) and Phuket (HKT). The 1,868-kilometre Vietnamese connection will be flown four times weekly facing no direct competition. The short 380-kilometre connection to Thailand will operate daily, with competition coming from Firefly which already serves Phuket from Penang with daily flights. Both of the new airport pairs will be operated by the airline’s A320 fleet. Speaking about the launch of the Phuket service, Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial, AirAsia Malaysia, said: “We are pleased to continue strengthening our ASEAN footprint and the connectivity within the region. As Phuket and Penang are hubs in Thailand and Malaysia, it is great to see the efforts channelled to enhance the connectivity between one hub and another.” OAG Schedules Analyser data shows that AirAsia will operate 10 routes from Penang during S18, including five domestic links. The Hanoi route becomes its second connection to Vietnam from Penang, with the LCC already serving Ho Chi Minh City. See how Penang Airport’s FTWA compares to others from around the world.
